Position Overview:
The Solar Operations Technician is responsible for the safe operation, inspection, maintenance, and performance optimization of utility-scale solar generation facilities. This role supports the day-to-day operation of the solar power plant by monitoring equipment performance, performing preventative and corrective maintenance, troubleshooting electrical and control systems, and ensuring maximum plant availability.
Working closely with Operations, Engineering, and Asset Management teams, the Solar Operations Technician plays a key role in maintaining reliable renewable energy production while ensuring compliance with all safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Monitor and operate solar power plant systems to ensure safe, continuous, and efficient energy production
- Perform routine inspections of solar PV arrays, inverters, transformers, switchgear, protection systems, and related electrical equipment
- Conduct preventative maintenance activities in accordance with established maintenance schedules and manufacturer recommendations
- Troubleshoot and repair electrical, mechanical, and control system issues to minimize equipment downtime and production losses
- Identify, diagnose, and respond to plant alarms, faults, and equipment performance issues
- Assist with testing, commissioning, and operational verification of plant equipment and system upgrades
- Maintain accurate maintenance records, operational logs, inspection reports, and work orders
- Prepare reports related to plant performance, maintenance activities, equipment condition, and corrective actions
- Support engineering and technical teams in resolving complex operational and equipment issues
- Ensure compliance with all company Health & Safety policies, environmental regulations, operating procedures, and industry standards
- Participate in safety meetings, inspections, audits, and hazard identification activities
- Maintain required training and certifications applicable to plant operations and electrical work
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders, contractors, vendors, and clients to support plant operations and maintenance objectives
- Communicate plant status, maintenance schedules, and operational concerns to management and project stakeholders
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives focused on plant reliability, performance, and operational efficiency
CANDIDATE PROFILE:
- Minimum 3 years of experience in electrical operations, maintenance, testing, commissioning, or related field service environments
- Experience working with utility-scale renewable energy facilities, including solar, wind, hydroelectric, or battery energy storage systems is considered an asset
- Strong understanding of electrical systems including transformers, switchgear, protection systems, controls, SCADA systems, and power distribution equipment
- Familiarity with solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, inverters, monitoring systems, and plant communications networks is preferred
- Demonstrated troubleshooting and diagnostic skills with the ability to identify and resolve technical issues efficiently
- Knowledge of electrical safety practices, lockout/tagout procedures, and high-voltage work environments
- Relevant electrical, renewable energy, or operations and maintenance certifications considered an asset
- Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, schematics, operating procedures, and technical documentation
- Strong organizational and documentation skills with attention to detail
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work independently while also contributing effectively within a team environment
- Valid driver’s license with the ability to travel to and work at remote project sites as required
- Experience working in utility, industrial, or power generation environments considered an asset
